21.05.2010., 23:21 | #1381 | El Más Loco | Ovo se cekalo, muchas gracias 593. Shane Black ('Lethal Weapon'), John Carpenter ('Halloween'), Frank Darabont ('The Shawshank Redemption'), William Goldman ('The Princess Bride'), Paul Schrader ('Taxi Driver'), and dozens of other Hollywood screenwriters share hilarious anecdotes and penetrating insights in 'Tales from the Script,' the most comprehensive documentary ever made about screenwriting. By analyzing their triumphs and recalling their failures, the participants explain how successful writers develop the skills necessary for toughing out careers in one of the world's most competitive industries. They also reveal the untold stories behind some of the greatest screenplays ever written, describing their adventures with luminaries including Harrison Ford, Stanley Kubrick, Joel Silver, Martin Scorsese, and Steven Spielberg. The film was produced in tandem with the upcoming HarperCollins book of the same name. |

26.05.2010., 03:04 | #1382 | El Más Loco | Hard to Replicate: A Ridley Scott Profile Our friend Trevor Hogg at FlickeringMyth.com has put together a nice 5-part profile on director Ridley Scott. My favorite Ridley Scott story involves screenwriter Callie Khouri. I don't have the source for this anecdote, but I think I remember it pretty clearly. Before she broke into the business, Khouri wrote 'Thelma & Louise' on spec. She got it to a friend who forwarded it to someone who slipped it to Scott Free, the production company for brothers Ridley and Tony Scott. Then Khouri got The Phone Call: 'Mr. Scott would like to meet with you.' Imagine how nervous Khouri was as she entered the offices of Scott Free. She bided her time, then was ushered into Ridley's office. And the very first words he said to Khouri were, 'Well, first off, the ending stays.' He was referring to the ending of 'Thelma & Louise' where the two Protagonists drive off the cliff together. And I remember reading Khouri recounting this story saying, 'As soon as he said those words, I knew that Ridley 'got' the script.' Classic! Next up for Trevor... Hayao Miyazaki. Very much look forward to that. |
Hrvatskog Židova, Osjeèanina i slavnog producenta mnogih filmskih blockbustera poput Hanibala, Mirotvorca, Gladijatora, Shindlerove liste i mnogih drugih. |

U konaènici, primjeæuje amerièki filmski povjesnièar Leonard Maltin, “Goli u sedlu” otvorili su vrata Hollywooda Stevenu Spielbergu, Georgu Lucasu, Martinu Scorseseu, Francisu Fordu Coppoli i Peteru Bogdanovichu. |

Always visually exciting, Huston's films sensitively portray humankind in all its incarnations, chronicling the attempts by protagonists to conceive and articulate their identities. In this study, Lesley Brill shows Huston's films to be far more than formulaic adventures of masculine failure, arguing instead that they demonstrate the close connection among humanity, the natural world, and divinity. |
Martin Rubin, 'Thrillers (Genres in American Cinema)' Cambridge University Press ISBN: 0521581834 March 28, 1999 336 pages PDF 26.3 MB The thriller is perhaps the most popular and widespread movie genre--and the most difficult to define. Thrillers can contain gangsters or ghosts, space helmets or fedoras. They charge our familiar world with a spirit of exotic, old-fashioned adventure. They give us pleasure by making us uncomfortable--on the edge of our seats. Thrillers provides a comprehensive treatment of this genre, from silent serials to stalker films, from Alfred Hitchcock to Quentin Tarantino, from The Great Train Robbery to L.A. Confidential. This accessible, wide-ranging volume is designed to appeal to students and general filmgoers alike, and shows how this visceral, double-faced film genre has aroused our intense sensations throughout decades of American cinema. |

Contrary to what we have been led to believe, films are better than ever-we just can't see the good ones. Movie Wars cogently explains how movies are packaged, distributed, and promoted, and how, at every stage of the process, the potential moviegoer is treated with contempt. Using examples ranging from the New York Times's coverage of the Cannes film festival to the anticommercial practices of Orson Welles, Movie Wars details the workings of the powerful forces that are in the process of ruining our precious cinematic culture and heritage, and the counterforces that have begun to fight back. |

Tesko mi je povjerovati u vijest koja je ovih dana u filmskim krugovima odjeknula poput groma: I just received this email: Hello, my name is Rebekah. I was “Mystery Man’s” administrative assistant for a number of years. Unfortunately, he passed away not long ago. I'm terribly sorry. He made it his express wish not to reveal his identity. Before he passed away, he had completed roughly 2/3 of his screenwriting book, and I am partnering with a couple of writers to finish the book using bits from his various articles. I will follow-up with one more e-mail advising how his fans can download his free screenwriting book. I really have no idea yet as to when it will be available. Again, I'm very sorry to bring you this news, and if you could assist us in getting the word out, we would greatly appreciate it. I emailed Rebekah back. She confirmed that Mystery Man had, indeed, passed away. I can only assume this is true. If so, it's awful news. |
Razmijenili smo na desetke mailova, zadnji mi je stigao krajem veljace (priblizno u to vrijeme iznenadno je prestao i twittati). Samo neki od komentara s bloga Scotta Myersa: He was inspiring. I found his posts always inspired me to think in deep and complex ways about film and screenwriting. Not to mention he was generous in spirit, kind, funny, and sweet. Simply one of my all-around favorite people I know - online or otherwise. I really looked forward to the day we'd meet over martinis. |
My condolences to every dreaming and aspiring screenwriter. We lost a great mentor. MM Thanks for your great legacy. |
Mystery Man was one of the first blogs I ever read on screenwriting and was a big inspiration for me to start my own blog. He was a very insightful writer and his persona was full of intrigue. Like the first comment by James, I hope the report of his death—in Mark Twain style— is an elaborate hoax. One thing that makes me think it isn’t a hoax is I traded emails with Mystery Man back in March and on March 16 he agreed via email to write a guest post for me and then I never heard from him again. He’s just busy I thought. But even more so, he once told me he was going to write a book and give it away. So when you report that his assistant says that his screenwriting book will be available as a free download it seems consistent with his desires. In a day of $500 screenwriting seminars and even higher paid screenwriting consultants, Mystery Man’s approached to giving his knowledge away seemed unorthodox and generous. But unorthodox and generous sums up my experience with Mystery Man. Like the passing of Blake Snyder (Save the Cat), this news—if true—is blow to the screenwriting community. But like Snyder, Mystery Man left a wealth of information and inspiration that hopefully will improve the quality of storytelling for years to come. |

YT 1 i 2). “To me ljudi èesto pitaju.
Sve ostaje na nekoj vrsti reverznog inzenjeringa te subverzije, dijaloskog skeca/bradonjinih mudiju u babinim ustima, you name it. Why are weso blind to see? Hugo Frey, Louis Malle (French Film Directors) Manchester UP 2004 ISBN 0719064570 171 Pages PDF OCR 8 MB Hugo Frey introduces Malle's work through a lucid analysis of his many masterpieces. The book focuses on the most challenging aspects of Malle's oeuvre, his aesthetic vision, his youthful attraction to a form of right-wing pessimism, and his 1970s libertarianism. By rethinking Malle's portrayals of Nazi-occupied France, Frey demonstrates that he is of equal importance to contemporary historians as to film studies. This is a nuanced study of an important filmmaker, and a critical intervention in the debates which surround Malle's work. |

Izvor: VL |

God, that sounds so long ago. Here's the soundtrack from one of the funniest movies ever made. If you live in a cave and haven't seen the movie yet, do so and then listen to the just as crazy soundtrack. Enjoy....

Scarface (1983) With exception of the 'Godfather' films, This probably stands out as one of the greatest gangster films ever made. It's a pop culture gem also. Everyone from rappers to other filmmakers have directly quoted this film as a direct influence on their lives. The only bad thing aboout this is that they never put sound bites from the film on this soundtrack. That would have been a welcome extra due to Pacino having some great lines and monologues through the movie. Enjoy this gem from the eighties.....

70's Disaster Movies I'm a fan of the great disaster flicks of the 1970's. These are the ground work for all of your CGI loaded movies that you enjoy today. Next time you see 'Independence Day', 'Twister', 'Volcano', or anything else you see today, think of these. The fire and the water were all real thanks to the hard work of the crews involved. Enjoy these out of print gems..... |
Batman Begins Sit back and wait for July 18th. 'The Dark Knight' will be coming out that day. From what I've seen of it, this one's gonna rock. The Joker, as played by Heath Ledger, looks totally psycho. Just to keep you on the edge of your seat while waiting for this, here's the soundtrack for 'Batman Begins'.... |
The Romero Dead Quadrilogy 'They're coming to get you Barbara'. That has to be without a doubt one of the greatest lines in any single horror film. I just sat and had a marathon session of watching all four of Romero's 'Dead' films. To this day, it's still one of the best franchises to watch when you have the free time to do so. These films have some great soundtracks which I'm more than happy to post here for your audio enjoyment. Thanks and props go out to 'The Long Island Ripper' over at the Inferno Music Crypt for posting an expanded version of the 'Land Of The Dead' soundtrack. Check out his great blog and his posts. Rob Zombie Movie Soundtracks Here are the soundtracks for Rob Zombie's three movies. This man truly has a sick and twisted vision (not that there's anything wrong with that). His films are truly ultra-violent and enjoyable for the blood and gore freaks out there. I did like his vision of 'Halloween'. I don't view it as a remake, but instead as his interpretation of John Carpenter's legendary 1978 masterpiece. Enjoy.... |
The Indiana Jones Trilogy Here are the out of print soundtracks for the first three Indiana Jones films. I'm waiting for 'Indiana Jones And The Kingdom Of The Crystal Skull' with great patience. I wish a trailer would be out already. Hopefully, a trailer will be shown on Super Bowl Sunday. Enjoy these John Williams classics.... |

Universal Horror Themes I ran across this over at Unversal Horror Sounds and want to share it with everybody else. There's some great stuff over at that blog. The blogmaster has great taste because no one (and I mean no one) will ever top Universal as making some of the greatest Horror movies ever made. Texas Chainsaw Massacre Trilogy I was sitting back and thinking about the good old days when I got my first VCR. The thing was a huge monster. It was so primative. It was so primative in the fact that it's remote was connected to it by a wire. That sounds so wrong nowadays. The first movie I rented was something I kept hearing and hearing about but had never seen. I was so happy that I saw 'Texas Chainsaw Massacre' for the first time. Here's the soundtracks for the first three chainsaw massacres. Enjoy....... |

American Cinematographer Tackles Inception It seems you can’t turn your head now-a-days without being bombarded with stuff on Inception, nor can you walk into a bookstore without seeing a row of magazines with Leonardo DiCaprio on the cover. The latest magazine to plaster Leonardo and Inception all over its front page is American Cinematographer. Inside is a sprawling 13-page write up on Christopher Nolan’s sci-fi action thriller that delves pretty deep into how Christopher and cinematographer Wally Pfister pulled off some of the film’s jaw-dropping and surreal visuals. Perhaps the most entertaining out of all the ways they managed to get some of the shots they did was when they strapped cameras to to skiers with “strong backgrounds in skiing and mountain travel.” “Fundamentally, I wanted every shot to be moving,” says Nolan. “I wanted to base the photography in these scenes on what we’d done with vehicles in The Dark Knight. I wanted to always have a point of view for the camera, to always be moving with the action and putting the audience into the experience. Chris [Patterson] was able to pull off some really extraordinary shots. He was very receptive to putting more and more movement into shots, even little storytelling shots. That footage all cut together with what I like to call a ‘tumbling forward’ quality, where you’re being pulled along with the action.” Craziness, right? Well there are many more awesome stories and facts revealed about how Christopher Nolan, Wally Pfister, and the rest of the Inception team approached different aspects of filming this movie. See if you can find American Cinematographer at your local bookstore, it’s more common than you think, and read the rest for yourself – you won’t regret it. Until then, here are some juicy pictures from the magazine spread to keep you happy. |

Bicycle Thieves (Ladri di biciclette) (Bfi Film Classics) By Robert Gordon Publisher: British Film Institute 2008 96 Pages ISBN: 1844572382 PDF 10 MB Bicycle Thieves (Ladri di biciclette) Vittorio de Sica, 1948 is unarguably one of the fundamental films in the history of cinema. It is also one of the most beguiling, moving and (apparently) simple pieces of narrative cinema ever made. The film tells the story of one man and his son, as they search fruitlessly through the streets of Rome for his stolen bicycle; the bicycle which had finally freed him from the poverty and humiliation of longterm unemployment. One of a cluster of extraordinary films to come out of post-war, post-Fascist Italy after 1945 – loosely labelled ‘neo-realist’ – Bicycle Thieves won an Oscar in 1949, topped the first Sight and Sound poll of the best films of all time in 1952 and has been hugely influential throughout world cinema ever since. It remains a necessary point of reference for any cinematic engagement with the labyrinthine experience of the modern city, the travails of poverty in the contemporary world, the complex bond between fathers and sons, and the capacity of the camera to capture something like the essence of all of these. Robert S. C. Gordon’s BFI Film Classics volume shows how Bicycle Thieves is ripe for re-viewing, for rescuing from its worthy status as a neo-realist ‘classic’. It looks at the film’s drawn-out planning and production history, the vibrant and riven context in which it was made, and the dynamic geography, geometry and sociology of the film that resulted. |
L'Année dernière à Marienbad (Last Year in Marienbad) (BFI Film Classics) By Jean-Louis Leutrat Publisher: British Film Institute 2008 72 Pages ISBN: 0851708218 PDF 6 MB Illustrated A quintessential work of 1960s European art cinema, L'Année dernière à Marienbad (Last Year in Marienbad, 1961) was a collaboration between director Alain Resnais and 'New Novel' enfant terrible Alain Robbe-Grillet. Three people, known only by their initials, move through the sprawling luxury of a mysterious hotel and its ornamental gardens. Perhaps M is A's husband and X her lover. Perhaps 'last year,' A promised X she would leave with him. Or is there something more terrible in the past? An abstract thriller, a love story, a philosophical puzzle, the film's deviations are, for Jean-Louis Leutrat, as complex as those of the human heart. |
Sunrise: A Song of Two Humans (BFI Film Classics) By Lucy Fischer Publisher: British Film Institute 2008 79 Pages ISBN: 0851706681 PDF 5 MB Illustrated Sunrise: A Song of Two Humans (1927) is one of the most historically pivotal of all films. A lavish and sumptuous production, it was the first film made in America by the celebrated German director F.W. Murnau, who also directed Nosferatu (1922). Sunrise mediates between German expressionism and American melodrama, the Avant-Garde and popular fiction, silent cinema and 'talkies.' Lucy Fischer's book is a model of film analysis, locating Sunrise in a fascinating range of historical aesthetic and philosophical contexts. |
The Night of the Hunter (BFI Film Classics) By Simon Callow Publisher: British Film Institute 2008 79 Pages ISBN: 0851708226 PDF 5 MB Illustrated The Night of the Hunter was Charles Laughton's only film as director. Adapted from a bestselling novel by Davis Grubb, it is part expressionist horror movie, part luminous fairytale, and contains some of the most haunting images in cinema: Willa (Shelley Winters), her throat cut and hair streaming out like seaweed, sitting in a submerged Model T Ford; her children, framed by looming animals, in a downriver flight from Preacher (Robert Mitchum), a silhouetted threat on the horizon. The Night of the Hunter is revered today, but it failed on its first release, and Laughton never recovered from the disappointment. Simon Callow explores Laughton's transition between film actor and director, and examines the considerable influence the film has had on subsequent filmmakers such as Neil Jordan and even Callow himself. |
L'Argent (BFI Modern Classics) By Kent Jones Publisher: British Film Institute 2008 96 Pages ISBN: 0851707335 PDF 10 MB Illustrated The career of Robert Bresson (b. 1907) is one of the richest in the history of cinema, but also one of the most enigmatic. For some commentators, Bresson is a severe moralist who's almost medieval in his concern for the darker aspects of Catholic theology. For others, he's best seen as a stylist whose work has consistently anticipated cinematic trends. Just as Bresson's 1959 Pickpocket was remodelled by Paul Schrader as American Gigolo (1980), so L'Argent (1983) is a study of spontaneous murder and a meditation on evil that has a striking kinship with contemporary vigilante and serial killer films. |

Applying a quintessentially British mix of dry wit and black humor to all their work from the impossibly noir Blood Simple to the wonderful The Big Lebowski, Joel and Ethan Coen have crafted often hysterically funny, startlingly unpredictable, and surprisingly moving reworkings of the crime genre. In this book, Cheshire and Ashbrook tackle recurrent themes including family, dreams, religion, and references to the work of Stanley Kubrick with dry wit and erudition. |

JJ ABRAMS DAY I figured I might as well make it JJ Abrams day considering I've posted three of his television scripts in the past week. A little history on our boy JJ. While in college he studied the script of Ordinary People. He sold his first script at the age of 23. That script was Taking Care of Business. Through the early 90's Abrams slowly grew, writing everything from comedy, to drama, to sci fi. After writing Armageddon it was a couple years till he wrote and produced Joy Ride. And that put him back on the mark for films. While writing films, Abrams also had a successful television career which started in 1999. He created the show Felicity which went on to run for four season and was a big hit. Along with writing Joy Ride in 2001 he also created the show Alias. This put Abrams on the map for action writing. Although he had written things such as Armageddon, this pushed him into the realm of television even further. The show was a success and pushed Abrams stardom farther. In 2004 he created the show Lost, his third series. Lost would redefine the way we watched television. Abrams then went back to films where he wrote and directed Mission Impossible 3. For a first time director, it was the most expensive budget. And that secured Abrams as a go to film director. Now a days Abrams does everything. He created the show Fringe a few years back and has over a dozen projects slated fr the future. He has also exploded as a producer. He produced and directed Star Trek in 2009. His Production Company, Bad Robot, is one of the biggest production companies in film today. He has also created one of the most anticipated television series with his new Undercovers. Abrams has accomplished a lot so far, but I have a feeling there's a lot more in store in the future. Enjoy!
